Hello Lovely Quilters,

If you're like us, you have a bin (or five) filled with beautiful leftover fabrics from past projects—too lovely to throw away, but seemingly too small to use. Welcome to the world of scrappy quilting!

Scrappy quilting is a resourceful, sustainable, and wonderfully creative way to transform those textile treasures into a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art. It's time to stop stashing and start stitching.

Part 1: Preparation – What Exactly is a Scrap?

The first step in any scrappy project is organization. Before you start cutting, define your scraps and sort them into usable categories.

Our Top 3 Sorting Tips

Tip Action Plan
Define Your Minimum Decide what your minimum keeper size is. Anything smaller than 1.5" x 5" might be better suited for stuffing or recycling.
Cut for Future Use Don't just toss scraps in a bin—cut them into common usable sizes immediately! We recommend cutting scraps into: 2.5-inch strips, 5-inch squares, or 1.5-inch squares.
Sort by Value, Not Color Separate scraps into containers based on fabric value (light, medium, dark). This is crucial for successful design contrast later on.

Part 2: Design Secrets for a Cohesive Scrappy Quilt

The biggest fear in scrappy quilting is creating a quilt that looks messy or chaotic. The secret to a successful scrappy quilt is using unifying elements.

Design Tip Action Plan Why It Works
Check Your Contrast Use a black and white filter on your phone to photograph your block layout. If the pieces blur together, swap out a light fabric for a darker one. Contrast is what makes a design pop. You need light next to dark for the pattern's structure to be visible.
Unify with a Background Use a single, consistent low-volume fabric (like cream, solid white, or a very faint print) for the background in all your blocks. This creates "negative space" and gives the eye a place to rest, making the entire quilt feel calm despite the busy scraps.
Stick to a Color Family Choose one dominant color family (e.g., blues and greens) and only introduce tiny pops of contrast. This is known as "Controlled Scrappy." This approach offers a beautiful, harmonious final look that feels less random and more planned.

Part 3: Our Favorite Scrappy-Friendly Patterns

The best patterns for scraps are typically simple, repetitive, and rely on straight lines or squares. The complexity comes from the mix of prints, not the piecing itself!
